What makes a quality rocker?
hat should I look for in a quality rocking chair? This is a question that has been frequently asked but rarely explained properly. There are a number of rocking chairs on the market made of materials ranging from plastic to metal. However, only rocking chairs made out of wood conform to the body for maximum comfort. In my opinion, the best rocking chair is one made out of solid oak and constructed from start to finish in the USA.
There are plenty of cheap imports that have flooded the market at big-box home improvement stores and some chain restaurants. These rockers are inexpensive but lack quality construction. They are usually shipped here in parts and are assembled in the USA. Be wary of anything that claims to be just “assembled” in the USA, as this is a tongue and cheek way of getting around the fact that the product is imported.
Low-quality, imported chairs, when left on a porch and exposed to the elements when subjected to heavy use, will need replacing within only a few years. Some of these rockers will come up if you do a Google search on “rocking chair recalls.”
Why buy a rocker that has a limited warranty when you can purchase one with a lifetime warranty? What little money you’ll save initially will disappear when it needs to be replaced. The diagram below shows what you need to look for when searching out a good rocker.
